The High and Low of Pocket Aces

Every poker player loves getting pocket aces in Texas Holdem, and every poker player also hates losing with pocket aces.

When you’ve got pocket aces and bet out on the flop and turn, and keep getting called, it is frustrating.

That happened to me at a recent poker game. I got dealt the aces, made a nice preflop raise, and had one caller. The flop came J-K-3. I made a good sized bet, and got called.

The turn came and brought a seven. At this point there was no flush draw on the table. I made another nice seized bet and got called again.

I was feeling frustrated at this point. Why did this guy keep calling me? Maybe he had A-K. I was thinking he maybe had J-K and flopped two pair, or he flopped a set with 3’s, but why wouldn’t he re-raise me?

I was staring at the place where the river card would be revealed and hoping for something good. I was very pleased to see another ace come on the board.

At this point I made a similar size bet to my last two; I didn’t want to check for a potential check raise in case my opponent checked behind me.

He called me and turned over K-Q. I was surprised he would keep calling me with that, especially on the river, but I don’t complain when the dealer shoves chips in my direction.
